Pantone Fall 2023 Fashion Colors Persian Jewel, Tender Peach & Doe

I will be sharing the clay recipes for the last three Pantone Fall 2023 fashion colors, Persian Jewel, Tender Peach and Doe.  Doe is a actually one of the Classic Neutrals that I decided to include.

Persian Jewel is a gorgeous blue with a hint of violet yet slightly muted.  Pantone says it is inspired by the precious stone, lapis lazuli.  I really love this color and find it to be very calming.  I would love to have a top or outfit in this color but might just settle for some new clay jewelry instead!

Tender Peach is a soft yet peachy beige with a slight pink flesh undertone.  I think it would combine well with the Persian Jewel or even the Burnt Sienna.  I will have to experiment and see.

Doe is a soft brown with a rich gold undertone and perfect for fall.  It definitely is a great Classic Neutral and thinking animal prints.

I haven't had the time to play with these color yet as I am working on my new revised edition to my Clay Color System.  So far I am on schedule to have it published next week.

Pantone Fall 2023 Fashion Colors Carnival Glass, Kohlrabi, and High Visibility

The Pantone Fall 2023 fashion colors include two shades of green -- one is a mint and the other a more yellow green.

Carnival Glass is the minty shade of green and does have, as Pantone describes, an icy appearance.  While this shade of green is particularly not my favorite, it could look nice when combined with another color such as navy blue.  I will have to experiment and see what I can come up with.

Kohlrabi is a warmer green and while similar to the brighter color, Love Bird, from this year's spring collection, it is slightly muted with a gold undertone.  This is my favorite shade of green that I always tend to be drawn to and can't seem to resist.

High Visibility is a very close match to Empire Yellow, which was also one of this year's spring palette.  It is also very similar to the yellow, Meadowlark, used in the Spring 2018 Pantone collection.  There might be a slight difference between each of these yellows, but it is so slight, one can hardly notice.  It is also on Pantone's list for a "close match" so this is why I chose to use the same color recipe again for this fall.

The only items I have made with the Pantone Fall colors for this year so far are a few of my little textured buttons.  Here are some in the High Visibility (Meadowlark) and Kohlrabi.  These, along with a wide assortment of other colors are available at the Kelowna Yarn & Needlecrafts store.

So here are the recipes for these three colors using Kato clay:

Carnival Glass

2 parts Kato Green

1/2 part Cilantro # 7-3 *

10 parts White Mix # 1-2 *

Kohlrabi

10 parts Kato Yellow

1-1/2 parts Kato Green

1/2 part Kato Gold

3 parts White Mix # 1-2 *

High Visibility

Viva Magenta! Pantone Color of the Year 2023

I am finally back and must apologize for the long delay.  I have had many things to deal with lately which I will be able to share eventually but not now.  In the meantime, I have just finally begun to mix up some of the new Pantone Spring Fashion colors for this year.

Pantone announced their color of the year for 2023.  It is called Viva Magenta!

I have been seeing a lot of facebook posts regarding this new color.  Some show it as an almost true magenta where some have even shared it as a plum or purple.

So is this color really a shade of magenta?  Or is it more a deeper red?

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, explains how they "drew inspiration from nature and what is real.  Pantone, Viva Magenta, descends from the Red family and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.

Cochineal is one of the most important insect dyes and you can read more about it here.  And this is another interesting article on its' history:   The Bug That Had the World Seeing Red

The dye it produces is a deep rich shade of red.  By adding various other ingredients, however, it can change to shades of pink, purple and even orange.  I have found that the Pantone color, Viva Magenta is a combination of both red and magenta.  That is why it is so difficult to determine on which side of the scale it really is.

As I mixed up the clay color to match my Pantone Swatch, I suddenly realized that this color looked awfully familiar!  I grabbed my samples and ran to my kitchen to discover why I had recognized it.  It was a dear ringer match for the color on the walls I had painted!  You can see my blog post here on the renovations I did.

I love this warm color and how it makes me feel whenever I am in the kitchen. I was looking for the paint color number but couldn't find the paint chip sample.  I used a Behr paint in a satin finish (recommended for kitchens).  When I find the color chip number I will add it here.

I haven't had time to create anything with my polymer clay version yet but should later on -- after I mix up the spring colors.  So here is the recipe using Kato clay:

Viva Magenta

4 parts Kato Magenta
3 parts Kato Red
1/8 part Kato Black

As you can see it is a very simple recipe that makes such a rich and exotic color!  I will be back shortly with more of my clay recipes for the spring colors.

Pantone Spring 2016 Fashion Colors Lilac Gray and Iced Coffee

Lilac Gray and Iced Coffee are two neutral colors added to the Pantone Spring 2016 Fashion color palette.   Lilac Gray is a classic shade of gray with a light purple undertone where Iced Coffee is a much stronger neutral.  Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, explains "With its natural earthy quality, the softness and subtlety of Iced Coffee creates a stable foundation when combined with the rest of this season's palette.    

I didn't have time to play around yet with the Lilac Gray but made some more "variegated clay yarn" using the Iced Coffee.

This time I used three colors to create my variegated mix with Iced Coffee as the main color.  For the lighter shade, I used the clay color Almond (*recipe #2-8) and the darker brown I used Chocolate Truffle (*recipe #3-5).  I made a clay log of each color and then cut each log into four.  I then reassembled the log as shown in Box #2 below.

Pantone Spring 2016 Fashion Colors Buttercup and Green Flash

Pantone explains that while most of this year's spring/summer palette trends towards calmness, a few of the colors offer a contrast.  Buttercup and Green Flash give that bit of brightness and combine well with the rest of the palette.

The snow around us has been melting the past few days and today we had rain with the most gorgeous and bright rainbow.  The colors reminded me of the Pantone spring and summer palette which inspired me to create a skinner blend of Fiesta, Buttercup and Green Flash.

The blended colors had a tropical appearance.  I decided to turn the blend into a cane and create a sculpted flower from it. 

So here are the clay recipes for the Pantone Spring 2016 Fashion colors Buttercup and Green Flash using Kato clay.

Pantone Spring 2016 Fashion Colors Peach Echo and Fiesta

Peach Echo is from the orange family but with a pink undertone.  Fiesta on the other hand is a deeper, orange-tone red.  Both colors similar yet very different.  I didn't get around to playing with these colors as much as I had hoped but I did pull out my Sculpey Silk Screen Kit and added some metallic black paint to the Peach Echo background and white paint to the Fiesta.

Clay Recipes for the Pantone Spring 2015 Fashion Colors Men's Palette

I normally do not take the time to mix up any of the Pantone fashion colors for men but for some reason, these colors rather intrigued me and I felt they could add some interest to the women's palette.  I discovered that we already had most of the clay recipes with the need for a bit of tweaking to only a few.  If you are interested in creating any items for men this year, these colors could come in handy.

The clay recipes I am sharing with you are for the six additional Pantone colors for the Men's Palette.  The other colors are the same as in the Women's Palette and you will find the recipes for them here.

Pantone Spring 2015 Fashion Color Glacier Gray

The color Glacier Gray is as Pantone describes, "an unobtrusive gray that contrasts and enhances, bouncing off other shades without taking away from them as it slips into the background to allow other colors to take center stage."  While this color is meant to be considered more neutral, it is considered as more dominant in the Men's palette.

Pantone says it combines well with Marsala and Aquamarine.  I started with combining it with the Marsala and added a thin sheet of Charcoal (recipe #1-9 in my Clay Color System).

I ran out of time to make anything with these but will show you later how they turn out when we do.  I also decided to combine the Glacier Gray with the Pantone color, Custard.  I added a thin sheet of the same Charcoal (recipe #1-9) to this mixture as well and really like the effect.  Here are a few items made with this combination:  A scarf bail and beads for a scarf necklace, some buttons and earring beads.

Pantone Spring 2015 Fashion Color Custard and New Extruder Dies

The Pantone Spring color Custard is soft shade of yellow that is, as Pantone describes, "sweet and sunny".  Pantone says this color pairs well with Classic Blue.  I have found that it compliments most of the colors in the spring palette.  We made some heart canes using our new extruder dies from Lucy Clay Tools.  We made a sort of Klimt or retro cane for the heart using the Custard combined with the Strawberry Ice, Tangerine and thinner slices of Marsala.  We then did the outside frame for the heart in Custard and some in Tangerine.  Below are some buttons we made from the cane slices.

You can see a demo for the heart shape extruder dies on a YouTube video here.  It isn't in english, but is easy to follow from the demo.  Since our new Extruder (CZextruder) and dies arrived we have been wanting to play with some of the unique patterns.  There are some interesting shapes worth experimenting with and these also fit other clay extruders such as the Makins or Walnut Hallow.

One thing that didn't impress us at first was how the dies were packaged.  We thought they were pretty cool coming in a CD case and all, however every die had to be removed from the metal frame.  This is done by "twisting" each die around until it literally breaks away (see pic 1).  So now we had these metal burrs on each side of the die (see pic 2) to deal with.  One person on the web said to just file them off.  After attempting one piece I decided it was a job for my claymate hubby to do!  He managed to work on the first set and then said he would finish the others later.  We decided there must be a better way so I asked Diane of Van Island Jewels, to see if she had any suggestions and she shared with us what she did.  I thought it was nuts when she first told me but we decided it was worth a try.  Well lo and behold!  Her tip worked like a charm and was so easy, we could hardly believe it!

In pictures 3 & 4 you will see what tool we used.  That's right!  Nail clippers!  We looked around the house and found a pair that we decided was worth sacrificing for the task.  The burrs were easily removed by grabbing it between the nail clippers as shown in picture 3.  Clamping down hard with the clippers, twist the burr off and nip the piece off in almost one movement.  You can see the before (#2) and after (#4) pictures below.
