Nativity Set from Nepal

A special package arrived in the mail yesterday from my friend Wendy in Australia.  She spends a good amount of time each year in Nepal working with the Samunnat project there.  Our package contained a  Napalese Nativity set that we purchased from the ladies of Samunnat.  Each piece is so adorable and beautifully handcrafted from polymer clay with little details right down to Mary's beaded necklace and matching bracelet.  The figures came in a traditional Nepali thauli drawstring pouch sewn from dakka cloth.

I also received one of these special "Bahini mala" ("little sisters") necklaces.  The bead is beautifully finished and strung on a beaded cord.

All the money raised from the clay pieces sold in their Etsy shop go to the Samunnat Nepal project.  You can read more about it on their website, "A Colourful Journey".   We managed to place our order in time for Wendy to ship it to us before she left for Nepal.  Unfortunately she had to close the Etsy shop while she is away but plans to reopen it again when she returns home to Australia in mid December.

These are such amazing little figures! The Crèche is such an integral part of traditional Acadian Christmas celebrations (along with delicious food LOL) here in northern New Brunswick. I have thought for years I might design and make some of these little Nativity scenes, and those Nepalese figures are so inspirational, Carolyn!

I think I first read about the Samunnat project on Cynthia's blog last year, but I am definitely going to check out your friend Wendy's blog tomorrow. Thanks so much for featuring these beautiful little treasures.

Yes, the figures are very inspirational. I should have mentioned that Cynthia went to visit the Samunnat project last year. It looked like an incredible experience.

I had spent some time in Nepal years ago (in my single days) and have so many awesome memories of my trip and the wonderful people there.

Namaste from Kathmandu en route to Birtamod Carolyn and Dave! I forwarded a link to your lovely post to the ladies who are ecstatic to read it! I heard that straight from Kopila when I phoned to say I'd made it this far! They are very excited that you loved their little figures Monique.
