Pantone Spring 2014 Fashion Color Sand

Sand is another one of the Pantone Spring 2014 fashion colors that is more neutral.  It is a rich warm beige with a slight yellow tone just like the sand on a tropical beach.

Here (see picture below) I used the color mixing formula from my Clay Color System tutorial to combine the Pantone color Sand with the hot and spicy Cayenne.  Included with my system are cards to print out for saving and organizing your color blend chips.  You will notice the changes in the Cayenne as more of the Sand color is added to it.  It not only becomes lighter but slightly muted as well.

I then used this color mixing formula for creating several styles of Bargello motif clay veneers.  The bargello veneer on the left with the Cayenne in the background is bolder than the veneer on the right that has the color  Sand.  The veneer in the center is another Bargello style with no background showing.  Each one has a unique look all used from the exact same blend.

Pantone Spring 2014 Fashion Color Cayenne

Cayenne is another one of the Pantone Spring 2014 bolder colors.  It can add a "dash of spicy heat to neutrals ... (shown here with Sand and Paloma, two of the Pantone Spring 2014 neutrals)

... and heightens the excitement when combined with Freesia".

I really like this shade of red and will be fun to work with and combine with some of the other Pantone spring colors.  It has a sort of an orange yet also rosy tinge to it.

Pantone Spring 2014 Fashion Color Hemlock

Hemlock is another one of the pastel shades chosen as one of the Pantone Spring 2014 Fashion colors.  I am not so sure how I plan to use this color yet but will share it with you once I figure it out.  Pantone describes it as a summery, ornamental green that provides a decorative touch.  They admit that it is quite different than greens they have included in past seasons and I have to agree with them there.

In the video, Leatrice Eiseman explains how all the colors this season are strong enough to stand on their own and yet many of them combine with each other very well.  She also says how Hemlock, along with the Violet Tulip and Placid Blue are soft enough that they could be used as a neutral when combining with other colors or pair any of the three pastels with a bolder hue for an au courant (or as my husband would call it, "groovy") look.

Pantone Spring 2014 Fashion Color Freesia

The Pantone Spring 2014 color Freesia is a rich "blazing" yellow with a slight orange undertone.  I love this shade of yellow and how it combines beautifully with so many other colors.

I've had this scarf for quite some time and is one of my favorites.  I happened to have it hanging in our studio for the past week as I was thinking about creating a clay accent piece for it.  I suddenly realized and was so excited and amazed when I discovered the colors in this scarf were a very close match to the Pantone spring 2014 colors of Radiant Orchid, Dazzling Blue, Violet Tulip and Freesia!

I did manage to make some time to play with more bargello and here is a scarf necklace created with the Freesia, Radiant Orchid and Dazzling Blue combination to go with my scarf.

Pantone Spring 2014 Fashion Color Placid Blue

The Pantone Spring 2014 fashion color Placid Blue is a soft pastel that is a wonderful compliment to the strong and bold Dazzling Blue.  Pantone describes it as a picture perfect, tranquil and reassuring sky and induces a sense of peaceful calmness.  This shade of blue can also be used as a neutral so it could be combined with darker colors when creating a skinner blend or working with a mokume gane technique.  I didn't have any time to play with my clay colors yesterday so hopefully I will today and have more ideas to share with you later.

Pantone Spring 2014 Fashion Color Dazzling Blue

The Pantone Spring 2014 Fashion Color Dazzling Blue is a another strong and vibrant color.  This beautiful shade of blue pairs quite well with the bold Radiant Orchid.  Leatrice Eiseman describes this blue as a little more exciting than the typical navy type blue that is almost "electric".

I was playing around with some of the clay in the Dazzling Blue and Radiant Orchid to see how they look together.  I created some blends and made some Bargello motif patterns from them just for fun.

Pantone Spring 2014 Fashion Color Violet Tulip

One of the unusual things with the Pantone Fashion color choices this coming season is the combination of the bold and vibrant with soft pastels.  I've always been attracted more to the brighter and deeper colors and not so much to the paler pastel shades.  There is something about the softer pastels that can not only have a more calming effect but can help tone down the stronger colors to create more balance.  A perfect example of this is combining a strong color like the Pantone color of the year, Radiant Orchid with the soft pastel shade of Violet Tulip.

I created a small sheet of clay using a mokume gane technique with this two color combination.  To create a more striking mokume blend, another color such as white or black, should be added for more contrast, but I did this just for a sample to show how the two shades compliment one another and the Violet Tulip tones down the Radiant Orchid quite a bit.
